Biography

Duncan Eddy is a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford. His is the Executive Director of the Stanford Center for AI Safety, a researcher of Mineral-X, and conducting research in the Stanford Intelligent Systems Laboratory (SISL) with Mykel Kochenderfer. Of particular interest is optimal decision making in safety-critical, climate, and space systems, where operational decisions must be made safely, correctly, and in a timely manner while still being explainable and usable by human stakeholders. His work focuses on intersections of software engineering, distributed systems, control theory, artificial intelligence, and astrodynamics.

Prior to starting his fellowship in 2024, he was a Principal Applied Scientist at Amazon Web Services, where he worked on building and operating novel software services for large-scale, distributed edge compute applications. He received his PhD in 2021 from Stanford University on Optimal Decision-Making for Large Scale Earth Observing Satellite Constellations. He led the Spacecraft Operations Group at Capella Space, successfully building and fully automating operations the first US Commercial Synthetic Aperture Radar Earth Imaging spacecraft. He subsequently started and led the Spacecraft Operations and Space Safety Group at Project Kuiper, responsible for developing automated systems for the safe operations of Amazon's 3,200-satellite commercial communications constellation.
